What is energy therapy?
Energy therapy is based on an unseen but palpable field of energy that surrounds and permeates our bodies. You may have heard of chakras and meridians and auras. These terms all relate to this field of energy that creates and reflects our state of wellness.
It sounds a bit woo-woo, but think about it this way: Have you ever come out of an intense meeting or conversation and thought, “I’m so drained.” Or, on the flip side, how do you feel after a walk in the woods or lunch with a good friend — refreshed, ready for anything? Those responses reflect your energy.
An energy healing session is simply a more intentional way to clear and balance our energy. It creates deep relaxation that can loosen muscle tension and increase blood flow so that more oxygen and nutrients can reach our cells and more toxins can be released, which supports overall well-being.
I earned certification in an approach called Healing Touch, which was created in the 1980s by a nurse in Colorado and is now offered in hospitals around the country including several in Cincinnati.
Healing Touch uses light or near-body touch while you lie fully clothed on a table or sit in a chair, to help you connect with yourself as a resource for clarity and calm when
. . . a diagnosis or a loss or any other transition alters your life and maybe your sense of self too. Remember, even happy events can be anxiety producing (i.e. new baby, new job, moving). Taking time to process emotion fosters peace of mind.
. . . you’re a caregiver or parent, a helping professional or volunteer, a leader, or an activist, and the work makes you exhausted and perhaps anxious at times. Caring for yourself is essential to sustain your service.
. . . you’re in cancer treatment or have had surgery or are injured, as a complement to medical care. Relaxation supports recovery.
What Happens in a 1:1 Healing Touch Session?
When someone comes for an individual session, we begin with their hopes and goals for the session and discuss their health history and current challenges. They also complete a consent and registration form.
Then they lie on a massage-type table, fully clothed and usually covered with a blanket, while I first assess their energy, then apply a series of techniques to clear, open, and balance the energy, and conclude with a re-assessment. These may be done with hands lightly on their body or just above. Throughout, the lights are dimmed, and instrumental music is playing. Clients often fall asleep!
After I’m finished, they rest quietly for a bit longer before I invite them to bring their awareness back to the room and when they’re ready, to get up from the table. I offer a glass of water and we talk as much or as little as the client prefers. I might offer a technique for them to try at home, and I encourage them to stay well-hydrated that day to help the process continue. They might schedule their next appointment several weeks or a month in the future before departing.
