Energy healing is a holistic approach to wellness that works with the body’s natural energy system, an unseen field that surrounds and permeates our bodies. Some people call it an aura, while researchers refer to it as the biofield. Perhaps you’ve heard of chakras and meridians, which are aspects of our body’s energy system that relate to this field.
It may sound a bit woo-woo, but think about it this way: Have you ever come out of an intense meeting or conversation and thought, “I’m so drained.” Or, on the flip side, how do you feel after a walk in the woods or lunch with a good friend — refreshed, ready for anything? Those responses reflect your energy. An energy healing session is simply a more intentional way to create rejuvenation.
A colleague of mine compares our energy system to a flowing river. Over time, this river may become blocked or stagnant due to ordinary or extreme stresses of life. Energy healing techniques clear away congestion, so the system flows freely. Clear and balanced flow of energy supports physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It encourages deep relaxation that usually feels great!
I earned certification through the Healing Touch Program, which was created in the 1980s by a nurse in Colorado, but the concepts it’s based on are common to traditional and indigenous healing around the globe. Healing Touch is offered in hospitals around the country including several in Cincinnati. I’ve been practicing Healing Touch since 2019.
Healing Touch uses light or near-body hand placements while you lie fully clothed on a table or sit in a chair, to help you connect with yourself as a resource for clarity and calm when
. . . a loss, a diagnosis, or other transition alters your life and maybe your sense of self too. Remember, even happy events can be taxing (i.e. new baby, new job, moving). Restoring balance supports you in moving through life changes.
. . . you’re a caregiver or parent, a helping professional or volunteer, a leader, or an activist, and the work makes you exhausted and perhaps anxious at times. Caring for yourself is essential to sustain your service.
. . . you’re in cancer treatment or have had surgery or are injured. Clearing and balancing your energy complements medical care.
When you come for an individual session, we begin with answering any questions about Healing Touch. Then I invite you to share your hopes and goals for the session and to discuss your previous and current challenges. You also complete a consent and registration form.
Then you lie on a massage-type table, fully clothed and usually covered with a blanket, while I first assess your energy, then apply a series of techniques to clear, open, and balance the energy system, and conclude with a re-assessment. These may be done with hands lightly on the body or just above. Throughout, the lights are dimmed, and instrumental music is playing. Clients often fall asleep!
After I’m finished, you rest quietly for a bit longer before I invite you to bring your awareness back to the room and when you’re ready, to get up from the table. I offer a glass of water and we talk as much or as little as you prefer. I might offer a technique to try at home, and I encourage you to stay well-hydrated that day to help the process continue. Some clients schedule their next appointment a few weeks or a month in the future before departing.
